  7. This package contains a fully functional copy of E! for Windows, a text
  8. editor primarily designed for programmers but that will be a great tool for
  9. any Microsoft Windows (tm) user who has to deal with text files.
  10.  
  11. E! for Windows is a very powerful product that has a very large number of
  12. features. We hope that you'll be as much excited about this product as we
  13. are.
  14.  
  15. E! is distributed as a User supported Software. This means that it is no
  16. free or Public Domain software but that you may give it a try before
  17. purchasing it. Please read the licence agreement contained in LICENCE.TXT.
  18.  
  19. If you use this software regularly, you have to pay the registration fee
  20. otherwise you have to stop using E! after the 60-day trial period and to
  21. uninstall it. Registered users will receive a printed documentation, the E!
  22. for Windows API documentation (the API remains undocumented in this version
  23. although sample Extension DLLs are provided) and will benefit from a FAX
  24. hot-line. You will also receive a registration code allowing you to suppress
  25. the reminder dialog box and to disable the CRC verification.

  27. The API Documentation is reserved for registered users. However, not having
  28. this documentation will not prevent you from using Extension DLLs written by
  29. registered programmers or distributed by us.

  48. 1. INSTALLING E! FOR WINDOWS

  55. E! for Windows should always be installed from an installation diskette. The
  56. installation program does some initial setup and you may run into trouble if
  57. you merely copy the unarchived files to your disk. We do not support versions
  58. not installed from an original, unmodified installation diskette.
  59.  
  60. If you give the program to others, please give an unmodified installation
  61. diskette (as described below). You may not give away a registered copy of E!
  62. for Windows or a copy of the API documentation.

  66. The package that you have downloaded or received on a diskette should

  83. Please copy these files (if not already done) to a single diskette (1,2 MB,
  84. 720K or 1,44 MB format).
  85.  
  86. To install, launch Windows (version 3.1 is required) and enter "a:install" at
  87. the File|Run prompt of the Program Manager.
  88.  
  89. A dialog box will appear after some temporary files have been copied to your
  90. disk (they will be removed afterwards). This dialog box allows you to change
  91. the default directories used by E! when installing. Don't change them unless
  92. you have a good reason to do that.
  93.  
  94. Then click on the "GO" button and wait until the installation process
  95. finishes.
  96.  
  97. You should then insert the EW and USER directories created by the
  98. installation program in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  99.  
  100. You may want to install EW in a Program Manager's Group. This is not done
  101. automatically because of some incompatilities with some replacement shell
  102. programs (programs replacing PROGMAN.EXE). We'll try to solve these problems
  103. with future versions of the INSTALL program. You just have to install
  104. EW.EXE. EWX.EXE is called by E! when needed and should not be called
  105. directly. If you do so, results are unpredictable.
  106.  
  107. Once E! for Windows has been installed, please read the documentation
  108. (EW.WRI) at least once (even rapidly). This will give you a good feeling
  109. about the fundamentals of E!. We have tried to make this documentation as
  110. complete and as short as possible. We don't think that you should lose too
  111. much time learning a tool that you are supposed to use everyday.

  113. If, for some reason, INSTALL doesn't work on your system, you can use
  114. COPY72.BAT or COPY36.BAT (depending on which diskette format EW is
  115. distributed) to install the distribution files:

  117.              copy72 a c

  119. to install from drive a: to drive c:.
  120.  
  121. In that case don't forget to do the following:
  122.  
  123. - Set the USER directory from the Control Center File|Directories menu.
  124. - Include EW and EW\USER in your PATH.
  125.  
  126. This procedure should be used only as a last resort way of installing E!. It
  127. is highly recommended that you use the INSTALL program.

  134. Please also read the Licence Agreement. Disk Vendors may not charge more
  135. than $5 (or its equivalent in local currency) for a diskette containing the
  136. installation files of E! for Windows. Also, E! for Windows may not be
  137. distributed on diskettes containing other products unless instructions are
  138. given describing how to build an installation diskette from the distributed
  139. disk.
